How to text that you’re running late or need to reschedule a date
By the Breve team · Updated
The short answer
Tell them as early as possible, own it briefly and be specific. For running late, give a realistic arrival time. For rescheduling, apologise once and offer a concrete new day and time in the same message, so it reads as “I still want to see you” rather than a soft cancellation.
Running late
Send it before you’re late
The moment you know, not five minutes after the start time.
Give a real time
“15 minutes late” is better than “a bit late”, and a slight overestimate is better than a second delay text.
Make their wait easier
Suggest they grab a table or order a drink on you.
So sorry — train’s delayed, I’ll be about 15 minutes late. Grab a table and order something on me?
Running 10 minutes behind, apologies. First round’s mine.
Rescheduling
Give as much notice as you can
Same-day rescheduling is sometimes unavoidable, but the earlier the better.
Apologise once, briefly
A short, genuine apology. You don’t need to over-explain.
Offer a new time in the same message
This is the part that matters: a concrete alternative shows you still want the date.
I’m really sorry — something’s come up at work tonight and I can’t make it. Could we do Saturday afternoon instead? I’d still really like to meet.
I have to move tonight, sorry for the short notice. Are you free Sunday or Tuesday evening? Same place, my treat.
If they’re the one rescheduling
If they offer a new time, take it graciously. If they cancel without suggesting one, reply kindly and offer a specific alternative yourself. If that gets a vague answer too, leave the next move to them.

How late is too late for a first date?
Anything over about 10–15 minutes deserves a text in advance. Much beyond 30 minutes, offering to reschedule is often kinder.
Is it rude to reschedule a first date?
Not if you do it with notice and immediately offer a new time. Cancelling without an alternative is what reads as losing interest.
