How to ask someone out on Hinge, Tinder or Bumble

By the Breve team · Updated

The short answer

On any dating app, the ask that works is the same: after a good exchange, suggest one specific plan — a place, a day, a time — linked to something you’ve talked about. The apps differ in how conversations start, not in how dates get made. Keep it short, confident and easy to answer.

What’s different on each app

Hinge conversations usually start from a comment on a prompt or photo, so there’s often a built-in topic. Use it: the thing that started the conversation is frequently the best hook for the date.

Tinder conversations tend to start with less context, which makes them easier to let drift. The earlier you move to a concrete plan, the better your odds — don’t wait for a deep conversation to form in the chat.

On Bumble, in opposite-gender matches the woman sends the first message, and matches expire if nobody replies in time. Once the conversation is going, either person can and should suggest the date — waiting for the other person to do it is how good matches stall.

How to ask, step by step

  1. Pick your moment

Ask right after they send a warm, engaged reply — not after a day of silence.

  2. Anchor it

Connect the date to something from the conversation: the prompt they wrote, a food they love, a place you both mentioned.

  3. Be specific

Name a type of place (or an actual place), a day and a time. Specific plans get specific answers.

  4. Keep it light

One or two sentences. No long preamble, no apologising for asking.

Example messages

From a Hinge prompt
You said your ideal Sunday involves a bookshop and a long lunch. I know a place that does both — want to try it this Sunday around 1?
Tinder, a few messages in
I like talking to you — let’s do this properly over a drink. Are you free Thursday evening?
Bumble, keeping momentum
Okay, this has gone well enough that I think we should meet. Coffee Saturday morning, somewhere between us?
If you want to offer a choice
Want to grab a drink this week? I could do Wednesday or Thursday after 7 — whichever’s easier for you.

Avoid these

  • Asking for a date in your very first message — there’s nothing to anchor it to yet.
  • Moving to another platform (“add me on Instagram”) instead of making a plan.
  • Suggesting a late-night drink at your place for a first meeting.
  • Sending the same copy-pasted ask to every match — it reads as exactly that.

Questions

People also ask

Is it okay to ask someone out quickly on a dating app?

Yes. Everyone on a dating app is there to meet people. Asking within a day or two of a good conversation usually comes across as confident, not pushy.

Should women ask men out on dating apps?

Anyone can suggest the date. Plenty of matches stall because both people are waiting for the other to ask; whoever asks first usually gets the date.

What if they don’t reply to my ask?

Give it a day or two, then send one light follow-up that restates the plan. If there’s still no reply, let it go — silence is an answer.
